Municipalities in the Western Gape received assistance of R88.81 million to procure diesel generators for water treatment, water distribution and wastewater systems during load-shedding through the Western Cape Government’s Emergency Municipal Load-shedding Relief Grant.
Overstrand Municipality received a R6.7 million share of this and has spent 100% of the grant money in the six months since it was awarded.
To date, the total project cost is R9 295 762.63 (including VAT) for nine generators. The Municipality is also contributing to the project from its own funding.
All nine generators have been delivered and installed at the respective sites. Seven of the generators are fully operational. The remaining two require additional equipment to stabilise the changeovers between Eskom and generator power, for which a further procurement process has been initiated with municipal funds.
The generators were installed at the Mossel River sewerage pump station, the Kleinmond Tennis Courts sewerage pump station and Kleinmond water treatment plant, Klipgat spring pumpstation, De Kelders water treatment plant, Pearly Beach water treatment plant, Gansbaai wastewater treatment plant, Palmiet River raw water pump station in Kleinmond and at the Kraaibosch Dam bulk raw water pump station in Gansbaai.
Residents are once again reminded to reduce their water consumption where possible – especially during prolonged periods of power outages so that reservoir levels can be conserved.
